TiG(rail)/whn - Twin Towers in 1982

30 Sep 2024 3 1 86
The twin towers of Whitehaven, taken from Whitey Rock, all the features on the seaward side of the railway in this image have been destroyed in stormy weather since approx 2015, although the slag heap next to the pillars was gone before then. The features in the cliff above the loco are, I think, for WW2 searchlight / gun spotters positions - they would be for the guns at Bransty, on the hill above, for protecting the Harbour entrance. not my image : fair use & public information

This stone work runs behind Whitey Rock. It supports the route of the railway. It would appear, from the staining on the stonework that various industrial by-products were dumped here. The fence is a relatively modern addition.

High Tide and the breakers are dashing against the rock armour / sea defences. The path, or some of it, is getting wet from the spray. This made walking back along here more exciting than usual.

Looking across at Whitehaven's East Beach, which continues past Whitey Rock, to the left, along towards Redness Point. The Cumbrian Coast railway line runs very close to the sea here, basically it goes along the top of the sandstone retaining / sea wall. The houses on the cliff top are in Bransty, originally a separate village, but now, effectively a 'suburb' of Whitehaven.
