hin[22]ccc - Bee Holes
20 Jul 2022 |
|
As per the notice.
Winter quarters for the bees that during the summer months live in straw skeps, and provided the Castle with honey, and beeswax for candles etc.
I suspect that the four holes at the lowest level are probably fire hearths, for heating in the worst of the winter weather.

B&M - dol/cat/oaw - Butterfly Bush

This butterfly bush was living up to it's name, with examples from at least four species either feeding or basking in the sun. Plus several bees ... There was a bit of a breeze and people walking around nearby, so catching a good image was quite difficult, especially as my camera was having a bad day. Maybe I had it on the wrong setting, or something.
gdn - weeds for bees

A very useful thing to do - many "garden" plants have little nectar, or it is very hard for the bees to access, yet bees are very important as pollinators for much of the food grown on this planet. In any case, "a weed is merely a plant growing where it is not planned for it to be growing" ...

Quite a large bed of Hypericum, which has almost finished flowering. This will need taming with shears. as it is getting a touch out of hand. I may try moving some of it. The local bees seem to like it.
