The "Northern Spire" was formally opened to traffic on 28th August 2018, after well over a decade in gestation [design, planning and fabrication]. Named as a result of a public poll in 2017. It carries the A1231 over the River Wear, between Pallion and Castleton to the west of Sunderland. The form consists of a two span cable-stayed structure and is 1102 ft [336m] in length. The central A-frame - The "Spire" - was fabricated in Ghent [Belgium], and was raised in February 2017; it is 344 ft [105m] in height. Lighthouse on Roker Pier, taken just about sunset. . Completed in 1903, built in alternating layers of red & white Aberdeen granite, to a design by Henry Hay Wake. Still operating. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roker#Roker_Pier_Lighthouse

The old lighthouse on the high ground above Roker Beach [near Sunderland]. Glowing somewhat in the sunlight, it looks like it has had a recent repaint. . Built in 1856 to a design by Thomas Meik and sited on the Old South Pier at the mouth of the R. Wear. It was moved here in 1983. . That green grass was quite sodden, due to all the recent rain.
