The business end of a network of reservoirs, steams, aqueducts and pipework. The station has an installed capacity of 56MW spread over six turbines. Constructed between 1957 and 1962, it began contributing to the national grid in 1964.

Back in the early 1980s I remember this area being illuminated in a very colourful way, the reason for that, I don't recall just now.

About as photogenic as the concrete dam at Cow Green Reservoir ever gets.
[In my opinion, this is about as ugly as a dam can be, especially given the wild beauty of the moorland setting]
The pass valve is set to discharge a minimum flow rate, to maintain the downstream river environment.

Water wheel, used as the prime mover for a micro hydroelectricity generator. It was under test at the time of our visit to Eskdale Mill.

The original buildings are a water mill (Eskdale Mill, dating from 1578), the leat has been altered to supply a new, exterior wheel. (Micro HEP),
This is between the village of Boot and the site of the 3ft gauge railway station.
Well worth a visit.

This discreet [non-descript] building caught my eye & ear as we walked past. It was emitting a sort of rushing & humming sound, not at all loudly.
It is the power station for Dolgoch Falls.
Micro-HEP plant installed capacity is 100kW & commissioned in 2015

Hydro-Electric Power station built in 1905 by the Porthmadog, Beddgelert and South Snowdon Railway (and the North Wales Power and Traction Co Ltd). This makes it the oldest power station in Britain, and probably one of the oldest grid connected HEP stations in the world. It was used to power the Telegraph Station built by Marconi at Waunfawr in 1912.
.
It supplies power to the National Grid, and the single Francis turbine was upgraded to 10 MW in 1990. The water is from Llyn Llydaw some 1040 feet above the "Chapel in the Valley" and the penstocks are about 1.25 miles in length. There were originally 13 staff but none now as it is controlled remotely from Dolgarrog.

Stwlan Dam impounds the upper storage reservoir for the Tan-y-Grisiau pumped storage hydro-electricity scheme, also known as the Ffestiniog Power Station, which was commissioned in 1963. This type of station can respond to a sudden peak demand in seconds and the power required to "recharge" the system evens out the base load demand overnight. Full output is 360 MW and operates at 72% efficiency - the missing percentage represents the use of electricity to pump water back up to Llyn Stwlan, at times of otherwise low demand - such as overnight.

Pitlochry HEP station on River Tummel, built in the 1950s, with an installed capacity of 15MW. Part of the fish ladder in the foreground. There is a public walkway across the top of the dam, and fenced private access above the sluices.
e2a - Further downstream there are notices warning of the potential for sudden rises in water level in the river flow. This can result from two factors, a) rapid increase in power generation resulting in an increase in the tail race or b) the large sluices in the dam can be lowered to reduce the water level in the reservoir, do that too quickly and a "tidal" wave goes downstream.
