cls[24] - Spigot mortar

Hopefully a replica WW2 "spigot mortar" of the type widely issued to the "Home Guard" [although I don't think that many rounds were supplied]. Each area would have a number of pre-built firing points ... see here www.ipernity.com/doc/312383/album/1288050 for a Welsh example which, sadly, had been removed by 2009.

Explanations in progress. Note, the red paint on the P17 rifle. This designates that the weapon took the American .30" (30-06) ammunition. To prevent accidents, the P17 had a red band painted on it to identify the 30-06 calibre. As did the ammunition boxes.

Display - with talks - of Home Guard weapons [all de-activated or replica]. Note the bell tents and army blankets. The nearest three weapons are all "Sten" guns, then a selection of Webley revolvers [plus an interloping Smith & Wesson .38], Thompson sub-machine guns and finally some rifles. Standing behind are their storage boxes. Note the case with a wide "red stripe" if I recall correctly that denotes the weapon is a non-standard calibre for Britain, requiring specific ammunition.
