River Dee at Llangollen, I was surprised at the drop in the left hand channel and over to the right by the railway station are some shallows - which had some Mandarin Ducks pottering about [and twitchers watching !]

Spent quite a few minutes watching the far side of the river - beyond the actual fish pass on the weir - trying to catch a jumping salmon. I saw several, but my reaction & camera response times were not fast enough.

Sunlight on the western face of the Alston Arches viaduct, and looking downstream over the River South Tyne. This view highlights the angle at which the viaduct crosses the river here, and the bulk of the "cutwaters" protecting the lower sections of the arches from spates / floodwater.

STR - the river wall at Alston

02 Oct 2023 13 7 194
The formidable wall on the right is supporting the alignment of the South Tynedale Railway [formerly the standard gauge Alston to Haltwhistle branch line] and footpath that now shares the route. . The base of the wall has some extensive and heavy stone blockwork in place as flood defences, [aka "rock armour" - note the large metal "staples" securing the blocks]. The main stream here is the River South Tyne, just behind the camera there is a bend in the South Tyne and the confluence with the River Nent. Their combined flow, plus the bend, when in winter spate was a risk to the stability of the railway's supporting wall, and the sheds further to the right but out of view in this image. Note, the large boulder field by the left bank, dropped in the inside of the curve ...

gbw - uk watershed map

Overview of UK watersheds, for the major river systems, some are surprisingly extensive. Although it looks like it, not quite every stream ends up in the seas surrounding our island nation. Several examples of headwater capture and the resulting misfit routes visible. Not my image : fair use & educational purposes

wst - storm damaged bridge

After having looked at the records for the flow rates on the River South Tyne at the Featherstone gauge - it would seem there was a peak flow event ... The highest level ever recorded at the River South Tyne at Featherstone is 2.72m, reached on Saturday 18th May 2013 at 1:00pm. I think the entrained debris in such a flood would be the likely cause of the demise of this bridge, the flooding was probably due to heavy rain and possibly melting of late season snow off the moors Not my image : fair use & educational purposes.

That subway under the old A69 bridge was flooded, will try to determine the depth on a future visit. That fence is more substantial than it looks, as it was intended to prevent most vehicles ending up in the river.

aav / gbw - spate dropping

09 Dec 2011 363
After snow, wind and heavy rain (which was even worse in Scotland) the river was in a real spate yesterday. Got this shot in the morning - 9th December 2011 - the river level has dropped quite a lot.
