whn - Wellington Pit Memorial

30 Aug 2024 9 6 92
This is the memorial to the 147 men and boys killed in Whitehaven' worst mining disaster. In 1910 the pit was the scene of underground devastation after an explosion resulted in fires and collapses. Sadly, this event wasn't the first or the last in the various pits in and around Whitehaven, despite improved ventilation, the thick seam being worked emitted a lot of "fire damp" aka methane. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Pit,_Whitehaven

IoM[3] - Kewley Memorial

13 Aug 2023 8 6 161
Memorial to David "Dawsey" Kewley, in recognition of his life-saving activities, now displayed in the "Memorial Gardens" on Douglas Promenade. [dated 1904, the year of his death] The text reads 23 lives saved, but "Dawsey" probably payed a role in several more - at least 38 by some accounts. Most seem too have involved him jumping into Douglas Harbour, during work for the Isle of man Steam Packet Company. more details here ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kewley

JBT - vandalised memorial

22 Sep 2021 8 5 214
Very disappointed to find that some low-life toe-rag thief has removed the remembrance plaque from this stone. It listed the causalities lost from RAF Milfield during WW2. I know from another image that the plaque was stainless steel, not bronze, so the scrap value would have been fairly limited. I added a couple of white stones to the little "memorial" pile by the wreaths.
