oad - Herdwick flock

Small flock of mainly young Herdwicks coming down the slope towards the beck, which is blocked by a wooden sheep gate. Ref : HFF - there are a mixture of fences and walls attempting to contain these Herdwicks. Probably doomed to fail as Herdwicks are almost as agile as goats and as difficult to restrict, partly because most flocks are "hefted" - that is ; accustomed to forage on an area of the fells, usually a large area, and often with several flocks 'timesharing' access.

Two young Herdwicks grazing, framed between two pollarded trees. Watendlath, Lake District. . Taken a decade after F&M nearly wiped out the hefted flocks.

Pollarded trees next to a small beck in the Lake District. Some of the Herdwicks are / have been browsing the bark off the cut branches. The wall nearest the beck needs rebuilding as it appears partially collapsed - some of the other dry stone walls appear to be "clearance" walls - that is, used as a safe place to put stones picked off the fields.
