The rise in the cost of cigarettes. A lot of this has been due to increases of the duty paid on tobacco. In some ways this is an easy tax ... it helps fund the NHS, and sadly, smokers take up a lot of resources, and virtually all chancellors have raised it. Not my Image : fair use & public education

UK taxes pay for many things ... International comparisons are actually quite fraught with pitfalls, mainly are the situations actually comparable. For example 1) the level of defence spending and the international commitments that represents such as treaties and bases overseas. 2) the NHS in the UK is normally free at the point of use as it is paid for out of the general tax revenue. . Not a new idea - getting the rich to properly pay their fair share of taxes {and not have clever accountants find loopholes for dodging into - evade or avoid ?} would allow so much extra for proper funding of public services and save the government from the expensive borrowing. IMHO - for too much tax is dodged, both by large businesses and already rich individuals, getting that into the treasury would balance the budget in a far better way than slashing spending ... . Where tax revenues collected by the UK government came from during April 2019 to March 2020. Total revenue, is therefore, £829 billion ...
