shw[8-22] - flash floods ; infiltration vs runoff

28 Aug 2022 76
Nice graphic explaining why flash flooding can occur when it rains heavily after a drought. . . As a gardener, I will sometimes lightly water certain areas when it has been hot and dry for a while and rain is forecast. [or I'm planning a proper watering session, I'll hoe & pre-water - just dampen - the surface, so that when I do the proper watering, it is more likely to soak in, rather than flow away over the surface]. . . not my image ; fair use & public information

gbw (meme) - wet weather

02 Oct 2020 246
During February 2020 various areas of the UK were subjected to 200%+ of their normal (climatic levels) of rainfall. [which also included snow in some areas] This made me smile, even though I had been thoroughly rained on during that month. Not my Image. It is raining very heavily over the now structurally complete PalVan. The remaining tasks are sorting out a few small discrepancies, change some bolts around and do a little more painting. But after it stops raining.

Rain running down the windows. It did that for something like 36 hours without a break, there were some variations in intensity) It was also windy with some seriously strong gusts.

wst d - active catchment

28 Dec 2015 2 2 443
The small beck (Slaty Sike) to the left of the road has had a number of small dams built across it, to impound water and slow the downstream progress of a peak flow event as part of an active catchment management scheme for Haltwhistle Burn. see notes. link to the project website - research.ncl.ac.uk/haltwhistleburn The sheep are trying to shelter in the lee of the trees, they are on the steeper slope, which is slightly less sodden.

gbw - runoff

28 Jun 2011 395
After a spell of heavy and prolonged rain, this field (of rough grazing) developed a fine example of the infiltration of runoff theory, as the ground is now saturated the small channels are all filled with water flows and the main beck is almost at bankfull stage, it did flood a little over the banks some time later.
