There is a crisis of capacity in the provision of prison accommodation being mis-matched against the numbers given custodial sentences by the courts. Early release schemes have been introduced to alleviate the situation, as well as encouraging non-custodial solutions, but these only help, not cure the problem One long-term solution to needing more prison accommodation is to build more facilities, if non-custodial and community-based alternatives to prison sentences are insufficient to cope.
