CoLC - Declining UK Defence [1952 - 2023]

Infographic : Declining UK Defence - 1952 to 2923.
Over the past 71 years, apart from a few small spikes due to world affairs, no matter which party was in power, there has been an overall decline in UK Defence spending from 10% of GDP in 1952 to slightly under 2.5% in 2023. [Currently, the Labour Government is planning to increase that to 2.6% imminently - 2027 - with a commitment to reach 3% by "the next parliament" and to update factors such as drones]. How that will be funded in the longer term is an interesting question, given what's happening over the pond.
A reversal of the "peace dividend" that was promised when "The Wall Came Down"...

The crisis with ru55ia invading Ukraine in February 2022 has brought this to the forefront of the political arena.
In 2024 wide-spread suggestions were made that the 2% should be 2.5% or even 3% ...
UK currently [2024] spends 2.3% and is debating an increase to 2.5% www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp3nv7j1xkxo

New official forecasts say the government will collect 37.1p per pound of GDP in 2028/29 - the highest level in nearly 80 years [bbc on 6th March 2024]
In his Spring 2024 Budget, the UK chancellor claimed to be reducing the tax burden. Agreed, he did take the equivalent of a pound off National Insurance and but added a £1:30p extra in other taxes, so actually one is at least 30p worse off - not to mention the freezing of the personal tax allowance - so more people will be paying taxes overall, Even the pittance of a tiny private pension added to the state pension is enough for you to be liable for tax ...

Some interesting statistics, and a few surprises.
NATO encourage their members to spend at least / approximately 2% of their Gross Domestic Product on defence.
[e2a - I would like to see this same survey done for 2022, ie post the invasion of Ukraine].

How well this relates to reality will depend [heavily] on whether the economy's recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic proceeds according to expectations.

Only the economies of the USA & France were showing growth in tha third quarter of 2021, when compared to the last quarter of 2019. The UK economy was actually shrinking during the same time period, as there was a significant number of 'Indian' variant cases.
