This image forecasts what the smoke, from North American wildfires, travelling over the Atlantic to the UK will look like on Monday19th August 2024 at about 18h00 [BST]. So, between late June and mid July the North Atlantic "jet stream" shifted somewhat ... It went from a SW to NE orientation that pulled warm air from the south over the UK to a more west to East flow that brought in cool and damp air from the north. That change effectively halved the day-time air temperatures. . Not my image : fair use & public education

The air masses affecting weather the UK experienced in summer 2024. The white "streak" marks the junction between the two zones indicated, and is [very approximately] the route of the upper air "jet" stream - which tends to pull weather systems across into Europe. The wiggles in the jet stream tend to determine if the air masses are cooler or warmer - air flowing to the UK from the south tends to be warmer than that from the north. .
