ssm - tower or chimney ? [HWW]

04 Aug 2024 2 1 58
A small tower rising from what I suspect is the vestry / north porch of St Mary the Virgin Church in Stamfordham. [It is either a tiny bell-tower, or a chimney ! - I think the latter]

ssm - dedication

04 Aug 2024 41
Modern dedication / memorial stone for the church lighting, which is in the [south] porch. Note the stone above is sawn ashlar that has been lightly chiselled, probably during the alterations to accommodate the dedication stone.

ssm - interior of St Mary's [HBM]

04 Aug 2024 2 4 60
The interior of Stamfordham's village church - St Mary the Virgin. Dates from the 13th Century, but was somewhat over-restored in 1848 during a project directed by Benjamin Ferrey.

ssm - from the North

Stamfordham's village church, St Mary the Virgin, viewed from the North - over part of the old graveyard. Note the slope to my right, I think that this break of slope probably marks part of the original boundary. The modern graveyard is further to the right [West], down the slope. {see the 2016 drone image}

ScI[23] - Old Kirk, interior

30 Nov 2023 1 104
Part of the St Andrew's Old Kirk with some interesting information panels [the rest is visible only as the lowest courses of the walls]. The Kirk was ruined after a storm in 1656 swept the entire eastern section into the sea. This is on the same headland as the seabird centre. www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/northberwick/standrewsoldkirk/index.html

eld - Elsdon Church

30 Jun 2023 1 78
This is St. Cuthbert's Church, Elsdon. Much of the 14th century church remains, although it was much modified in the 19th century. After the depredations of various raiders, it was rebuilt with a stone roof. It is reputed to be one of the places where the monks carrying Cuthbert's remains rested during their peripatetic wanderings between Lindisfarne and Durham.

Looking across a small part of the village green to the church, the old school is to the left.

hin[22] - derelict tower [1 of 2]

20 Jul 2022 1 1 109
All that remains of Panxworth "All Saints" church in 2022. Built largely of squared flint, with stone quoins, with some brick. Founded in the 14th century, all but derelict so extensively rebuilt by 1847 [A habit frequently indulged in by the Victorians]. Always had a small congregation so by the 1970s it was declared redundant and largely demolished in 1981 for safety reasons. There have been a couple of "recent" burials, going by the gravestones. The tower is maintained largely for wildlife [I assume bats and/or owls]

ESP - 94a - Suprasi Monastery Church

20 Sep 2020 1 192
Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Church. Polish Orthodox Monastery at Suprasi. The original foundation dates from around 1500 AD, but has a very checkered history, inc suppression / demolition by the Nazis in 1944. Rebuilt after 1996.

glo[16] - top gone

The truncated spire of St Nicholas' Church is a landmark on the city centre skyline. The removed section has been rebuilt, on the ground, nearby.
