Built 1854 to 1895 as a breakwater to protect the mouth of the River Tyne - at least partially to create a safe[-ish] anchorage for naval and merchant vessels. Stone built, extending some 900 yards and tipped with a lighthouse.
note : rebuilt by 1909 after storm damage in 1898.

Pottering out on a cruise into the Solway, on a sunny and calm day, we were away for almost an hour. The North Pier lighthouse could do with some maintenance and a coat of paint. (1 of 12 images)

When walking on the beach, this trawler was seen to be moored against the North Wall / Pier of the harbour at Whitehaven. No idea why they hadn't gone into the sea lock, but they landed something, the crew also loaded provisions (we think). Left quite early the next day.
