SoS[25] - by the spring [HWW] [Explored]

31 Mar 2025 10 8 32
This clump of daffodils always does well, as this spot is a bit of a sun-trap, because of the dry stone wall behind. . . {bragging but I rebuilt that wall from the ground up, after a section further left "fell down" on day when the local fox hunt were about, they also rode & drove over the very soft ground in the field {making deep ruts & horse hoof prints, some approaching 12" in depth} that is now planted with a mix of conifer and native broad-leaved trees. Managed for wildlife, including many nest-boxes and even a fox refuge. There's a resident hedgehog and a fox does visit - see the garden camera trap albums]

SoS[24] - early daffs

29 Mar 2024 2 106
One group of early flowering roadside daffodils, these are growing only a short distance from us [it's not the place in the background !]

SoS[24] - lambs x10 [Explored]

03 Mar 2024 15 11 254
Spotted just off the A689 [Alston to Brampton] on our way to Hickins' for some food. The fence is also providing somewhere to hang the hay ! The hay patch on the ground has two sets of lambs and one ewe, the other mum is the one much closer to the camera. First lambs I've seen in 2024.

STR / bri - Lambley Viaduct

03 Mar 2024 3 1 105
Looking across to the disused Lambley Viaduct. . Sadly, I suspect it will be some years before the narrow-gauge [2ft] South Tynedale Railway re-opens this part of the Alston Branch.

gbw - colourful trees

Went out to one of the rural tea rooms that we visit quite often for a late lunch - usual good fare ! we even bought a second round of cakes as a "takeaway treat" ... Highly recommended [and dog-friendly, too] - White Monk Tearoom. Alternatively, The Lord Crewe Arms supply more alcoholic refreshments. Both are in Blanchland, Co.Durham. Spotted this tree showing off autumn shades on the stroll back to the car park. Construction of the right hand wall / gate post is a little different !

pcc - corner

Turning the corner - looking back - onto the start of the path up to the Castle. I suspect that corner stone in the wall was originally up on the keep, in a similar corner position.

SoS[22] Dry Stone Wall & daffs {24 of 23}

30 Apr 2022 82
Spring daffodils, followed in a few weeks by Monbretia, grow at the base of this dry stone wall. I really wanted to get another foot [30cm] of height, but I was already short of suitable facing stones, and effectively I "robbed" another section to gain the amount of extra height already achieved.

gdn - dry stone walling

04 May 2022 3 1 139
A composite of Northumbrian & Pennine versions of dry stone walling methods. I would like to have added a little more height, but I was running out of suitable stones. I had to be parsimonious with the "throughs" in order to have enough "copes" [the top ones] and even then I had to lay them over a bit to manage to deal with the full length of this section. Probably my inexperience as this is the first wall I've built with these methods & materials. The area immediately adjacent on the far side of the wall, is a "wetland" / boggy area with a small pond. Although the grass has been cut, I have yet to trim the edge by the wall and the whole area is still in "winter mode".

oad - having a ride

18 Apr 2012 4 2 418
It took me several attempts to catch this image of one lamb standing on the ewe's back. Previous attempts had been beaten by the speed with which they moved to come closer - as I assume they associated a car stopping with the delivery of food. The gap in the top coping on the wall was repaired, with extra and replacement stones a few weeks later.

O&S - the ugly house

22 Sep 2012 4 3 332
The whole of this cottage [Tŷ Hyll] is largely built from large boulders, with no mortar. This end wall is actually the chimney! . Do a very nice cream tea, and with plenty of bees to watch ... I was convinced one set of bumble bees were living in the gap to the top right hand corner of the boulder without moss [see "note" on the image]. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowdonia_Society

O&S - fireplace

01 Jul 2021 67
Someone with a creative bent built [or designed] this fireplace. I'm quite a fan of dry stone walling and this is an interesting variation on that particular skill. . . Not my image : fair use & public enertainment

SBB - cgr / cs - car park

07 Sep 2021 1 192
Looking from the western end of the car park at the western end of Cow Green Reservoir over a short height dry stone wall - although the cap stones are cemented in place. This is the view as we eat our picnic lunch. Weather is sunny intervals, with a brisk wind. [You can see how low the water level has got, from the exposed foreshore in the middle distance, over the dry(ish) summer we have just had].

View from Wasdale Head Inn car-park, note the distinct "snow line"

gbw - boot wall

Dry stone wall. A massive, almost clearance style and size, dry stone wall just by the remains of the 3ft gauge railway station in Boot, Cumbria.

O&S - Welsh walls

14 Nov 2016 5 8 484
These look like a fence, however, they are dry stone walls. In fact, the version to be found in parts of North Wales - these are in the Snowdonia National Park, not far from Tomen y Mur. Vertical slabs set into the ground, and either very slightly overlapped or wired in position to prevent cattle or sheep pushing them over.

O&S - leafy bench

28 Oct 2012 2 5 556
Iron bench, seen in Carlisle. Actually quite comfortable.

oad - Herdwick flock

22 Feb 2012 11 9 571
Small flock of mainly young Herdwicks coming down the slope towards the beck, which is blocked by a wooden sheep gate. Ref : HFF - there are a mixture of fences and walls attempting to contain these Herdwicks. Probably doomed to fail as Herdwicks are almost as agile as goats and as difficult to restrict, partly because most flocks are "hefted" - that is ; accustomed to forage on an area of the fells, usually a large area, and often with several flocks 'timesharing' access.
