stb[23] - channel boat crossings; 31 Dec 2023

03 Jan 2024 1 2 115
Updated to 31st Dec 2023 - number of people detected crossing the English Channel in small boats. Much of the flattening of the curve in the latter months [Nov & Dec] will be due to unsuitable weather conditions ... I doubt if the people smugglers will be taking account of things like the proposed deportations to rwanda, partly at least because it is very difficult to catch these modern day slavers and secure convictions. . not my image : fair use & public information

There's a hole in my harbour, dear lizza, there's a hole ! Thanks to "Storm Ciarán" around 30th October 2023, the 400 year old sea-defences / harbour wall have a 16ft wide hole. Funding is being sought to make repairs and arrangements are being made, by moving boats, for example. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-67259624

IoM[2] - marina corner

Just a couple of the small boats tied up in Peel, and a few others in the background, although not on the visible section of the pontoons. This is the corner where the River Neb expands into Peel Marina.

IoM[2] - River Neb

The River Neb area of Peel Harbour / Marina. There's an automatic "flap gate" which maintains enough water up here for the boats to remain afloat at all states of the tide. The tall chimney in the background is the flue for Peel Power Station.

The moorings at Tobermory for many smaller boats, at or near low tide.

A couple of the "trip boats" that are available to take you around the docks in Gloucester and along the Sharpness Canal. The ship nearest the camera also took part in "Operation Dynamo" and the collection of masts above her bows are from several vessels moored up at T. Nielsons, a local boatbuilding yard.

Looking along part of the marina that is now in part of what was Gloucester Docks. Note the crane and the converted warehousing around in the background.

An unusual boat - but sadly neglected, and under water at high tide.

TiG - beadnell oddity 1

An unusual boat (from the bows) - but sadly neglected, and underwater at high tide. It would make an interesting restoration, but an expensive one as it will need a new engine.

Taken at dusk, with some artificial lighting from behind. This is the best of several attempts to capture the scene.
