TiG (rail) - de Winton

Two buildings of interest. On the left, the main part of the De Winton works, now a plumbing business. On the right, the derelict remains of the local tory club. Potentially, a lovely building. In the foreground, one of the footbridges over the Welsh Highland Railway.

T3 - the "Short" tunnel, note the curve & wall beyond. That lump of concrete is reputed to be the mounting spigot for either a mortar [Blacker Bombard or similar] or machine gun, operated by the "Home Guard" and dating from WW2. It made a convenient seat for a quick drink and biscuit break, whilst the members of the group collected themselves together. As it was on the track alignment, it had to be demolished during the WHR's relaying. There are several others in the vicinity.

T4 aka Tunnel Mawr - the longest tunnel at 924 ft [280m] and curved. Looking south, so this is the northern portal. Note the substantial retaining wall and the little "layby" - another good place for a sit & a snack. Walking through this wasn't especially pleasant if you didn't like dark holes ...

Looking southwards through T2 toward T3. . Long enough to be able to make sounds like a steam engine - dogs have a special skill at doing this ...

Looking at T3, the Short Tunnel, looking back from the approach to T4. Note the sharp curve in the tunnel, and the start of the substantial retaining wall.

I don't know if the line's original builders had planned for a tunnel, but a rock cutting exists here these days. . Location is looking north through the cutting, which is just south of the sharply curved Cwm Bychan embankment that follows the Byrn y Felin River Bridge over the Afon Glaslyn. For most purposes, this river bridge marks the start of the pass. . The actual T1 {tunnel 1} aka "Goat Tunnel" is just outside Beddgelert Station, about a mile further north of the river crossing.
