PQR - Breakwater in a storm

09 Oct 2019 5 327
South Breakwater Titan crane, probably turned to minimise wind forces. There is a stack of concrete construction blocks awaiting transfer to the North Breakwater. Waves are breaking over the full height of the south breakwater, the lighthouse at the pier end can be made out. In the distance, the Titan crane on the North Breakwater, which is still under construction, can be seen, also turned to cope with the wind and waves that are breaking over the pier. B&W image from around 1930. (used for research into Peterhead harbour's history)

PQR - 1950 Titan crane

1950s image of the Titan crane on the North Breakwater, delivering blocks for the divers to deal with. The group of divers are in light coloured clothes. it looks like at least one block is already underwater, another is on the crane whilst the last waits on the waggon, there are three waggons in the short train, propelled by the loco "Prince of Wales".

PQR - original paint

Found some paint, probably original, under one of the metal patches. The shine is from a patch with some intact galvanizing remaining.

PQR - under window bars

24 Mar 2014 1 788
There is a certain amount of rotten timber underneath some of the window bars, this is the worst found so far. The darker timber is damp, so will need to dry out before any treatment and repairs can be carried out.

PQR - old roof underside

24 Mar 2014 801
The underside has been painted over galvanising. The overlapped areas have shown the original paint colours. This Buff/beige inside and a deep wine red on the outside.

PQR - old roof fasteners

The corrugated iron roof was not the first - each fixing point has a second one within an inch or so.

PQR - old roof edge

24 Mar 2014 863
The overhang was about 6" - but most has rusted away. The roof still has traces of a dark coloured paint over the galvanizing.

PQR - old patches 2

Underneath the iron patches were some small areas of damage to the planks.

Having removed the corrugated iron sheets., the cant rail can be examined - note the dual fixing points for the roof sheets.

As there are two gun emplacements in this view, I assume that it was taken during WW2 by reconnaissance aircraft.
