Blackboard describing the only swallowtail butterfly species to be found in the UK. The area around Horsey Wind Pump is reputed to have quite a few swallowtail butterflies, but unfortunately, I have failed to see any during my various visits. Wild caterpillars tend to favour "milk parsley" in the Norfolk Broads, UK. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papilio_machaon ]

Reed Thatch on the "facilities" building at Horsey Wind Pump. This approach is from the pathway along little "canal" between the Mere and the Wind Pump. The carpark is on the far side of this building.

Milk Parsley in flower. Selinum palustre is a previous name for this plant. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peucedanum_palustre This plant needs to be encouraged - it is the primary [if not sole] food plant for the caterpillars of the very rare Swallowtail butterfly. [currently, it confined to areas of the Norfolk Broads - and despite looking, I didn't see one]. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papilio_machaon

The reeds around this bench provide a windbreak, and a gentle rustling when you aprk yourself here, with a view of the boats on the "canal" that leads over to Horsey Wind Pump.

Another visit to Horsey Wind Pump, to see how the restoration has proceeded (despite Covid and the difficulty finding a mill-right with time to spare). Built 1912, Horsey was one of approximately 250 wind pumps that drain the land surrounding the Norfolk Broads. It is now Grade II* listed and under the care of the National Trust. Much of the surrounding area is now managed as a wildlife preserve, with walks for tourists. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsey_Windpump
