An expedition or two - walking Bella - along the riverside and up to the Alston Arches. It was cold enough for icicles on the edge of the weir.

River South Tyne ... calming down but still a bit murky and stained brown with peat after some heavy rain a couple of days ago. [the river level screenshot will be in the winter storms album]

River South Tyne ... calming down but still a bit murky and stained brown with peat. There was some heavy rain a few days before this image was captured - and the river level monitoring shows there was a spate a couple of days ago, as a result.

aav - Walk over the arches : 28Oct2024 {1 of 9}

That's a LOT of water ! No wonder we could hear it thundering, as we approached ... As a means of protecting the piers from scour in spate conditions like these, the area under the bridge is paved [concreted] over and the drop over the weir is "cushioned" by some large lumps of rock. Note that the viaduct crosses at an angle, hence the "corner" in the over the far side ...

Looking at the river, the level is quite high and the noise was something else. Note the life ring - that weir has a wicked undertow in conditions like these, and the water is cascading onto some sizable rocks.

View from the Arches, upstream along the River South Tyne. There's quite a flow, as seen from the south bank earlier. The white structure [see : NOTE] in the image is actually the Environment Agency's monitoring station for the river / flow level. [EA was formerly the National River Authority]

aav - watching {1 of 2}

Spent quite a few minutes watching the far side of the river - beyond the actual fish pass on the weir - trying to catch a jumping salmon. I saw several, but my reaction & camera response times were not fast enough.

Sunlight on the western face of the Alston Arches viaduct, and looking downstream over the River South Tyne. This view highlights the angle at which the viaduct crosses the river here, and the bulk of the "cutwaters" protecting the lower sections of the arches from spates / floodwater.

STR - the river wall at Alston

02 Oct 2023 13 7 196
The formidable wall on the right is supporting the alignment of the South Tynedale Railway [formerly the standard gauge Alston to Haltwhistle branch line] and footpath that now shares the route. . The base of the wall has some extensive and heavy stone blockwork in place as flood defences, [aka "rock armour" - note the large metal "staples" securing the blocks]. The main stream here is the River South Tyne, just behind the camera there is a bend in the South Tyne and the confluence with the River Nent. Their combined flow, plus the bend, when in winter spate was a risk to the stability of the railway's supporting wall, and the sheds further to the right but out of view in this image. Note, the large boulder field by the left bank, dropped in the inside of the curve ...
