The Ozone hole over the Antarctic was detected in the early 1980s (and more recent re-running data showed that it was detectable in 1976). There are several other holes, and a number of things like high level jet aircraft flights also damage the upper atmosphere in various ways ... . The cause was shown to be the presence of halocarbons mainly CFC propellants in aerosol spray cans, in the stratosphere exposure to UVB light causes the release of Chlorine, which in turn, results in the destruction of the ozone molecules, which were providing considerable protection to life on Earth. .
