Residents in Chippenham say the flooding there from Storm Bert is some of the worst they've seen since the 1960s. This old B&W image [which is not mine] almost certainly dates from the same storm that flooded the River Chew valley on the 10th July 1968. I was at School in Keynsham - where the Chew flowed into the [Bristol] Avon - and remember amongst all the destruction, that a car was washed up in the "park" under the bypass bridge, and that 3 of the 4 original occupants had drowned. The sole survivor was found in a tree. Tucked away on the wall in the pub where we had lunch during our expedition along the SVR. Snapped it for two reasons - Torquay's opponents on 16th and 23rd April [ date ? - post 1971 from the currency]. I wasn't the only person looking at this ...

Close up to show more detail on the Hathaway churn plate. Interesting ! When my family lived in Chippenham I went to school [6th form] and one of my classmates was a Hathaway. I'll have to ask someone I know that still lives there ...

The Eastern wing of the old Grammar School building in Chippenham. I remember these very well (notes will give the subject / rooms I recall from the mid-1970s - see also the 1990 aerial image).

Not My Image : Taken from google earth. Fair Use & Educational Purposes Shows the full extent of Hardenhuish School in 1999. There are a few changes from the late 1970s, and there have been further alterations in more recent years. The red-roofed structure is "new" ... to be annotated. A bit of websearching suggests that this is the Silverwood School's Chippenham campus - a co-ed special education needs school for 4 to 19 year olds.

R. Avon at Chippenham. Taken from near the railway bridge which carried the Calne branch, but before the housing estate was built. Riverside Drive runs along the right hand bank, CAS lived approximately opposite the peak of the left hand bend. (Added a "note" to show the approximate location)

CAS's fourth and final home as a married and family man. He moved once more, to North Wales, soon after the passing of his wife. From his reaction, I think there were too many memories for him to stay here.

An enamel BR era Western Region totem sign for Chippenham. (on the Bristol / Paddington route). There is a good chance that I have stood under, or walked past this sign when it was in use.
