You do sometimes find some unusual patterns in softwood timbers. This one is open to a number of interpretations)

NER2853 - bottom door hinge patterns

30 Jan 2021 1 197
NER [North Eastern Railway] carriages are "bowsiders" - a term describing the curved lower bodysides. As a consequence, the lowest (bottom) door hinges need to have a much longer flap as shown by the nearest one (original, cast in 1901). These are suitable patterns for casting new hinges, originally made for the rebuild to NER2853, but will also be suitable for TR6.

O&S - wall shadows

The tradition of making shadows on the wall is always entertaining. Some of these are very easy, others not quite so much !

Some of the larger patterns are to be found on as part of this wall-mounted display. The rectangular, grid-like one is actually for window frames, several of which can be seen in the background of other images.

There are a huge number of patterns stored in and around the iron foundry (this was just one of the racks). . Given that this is an inland foundry, I was trying to work out why they have patterns for several types of mooring fairleads / bollards ...

nsm - dante inspired : detail

More detailed view of the two figures in the foundry. The one in the foreground seems to be loading a pattern into his wheelbarrow and the one at the rear seems to be about to tap (draw off) the supply of molten iron. . Apologies for the poor focus, the light level and the camera were not co-operating.

This is the main iron foundry. When working this vast room would have been very hot, smoke-filled and extremely noisy, plus the risks associated with molten metal and heavy moulds during the casting process. The crane is necessary for handling some of the heavier / larger patterns and castings

nsm - small castings

Display of mainly smaller patterns and castings, with some finished and painted examples on the board at the back.
