01 Dec 2024 4 3 65
The stone arches of the bridge at Pooley Bridge. This was erected in 1764 {replacing an earlier bridge from the 16th century}. It was washed away on 6 December 2015 when Cumbria was hit by heavy flooding during Storm Desmond, after storm waters scoured the riverbed from around & under the bridge piers.

HoS - blocks

13 Oct 2024 23
These are stone sleeper blocks, probably for fish-belly rails, some still have the cast iron rail chairs. The Stockton & Darlington Railway started off laid with these blocks. Eventually, the track became known as the "Permanent Way" ... Ignore the bit of modern "toy" track by the wall Sadly, most people will not even notice these, as there was no visible interpretation. However, I do know what they are ! I have seen these blocks reused in a number of places, including to edge slipways and beach access routes at the coast ...

IoM[3] - Rotary Club's Wishing Well

13 Aug 2023 73
Should have taken a close up of the plaque. However, research has produced some information ... This is a wishing well that was built in 1957 and presented to the people of Douglas by the Rotary Club, to be used as a means of raising funds for local charities & worthy causes. For the first few years it was in use it raised between £175 and £150 each year, which for the late 1950s was a not inconsiderable amount. Currently used as a small flower bed - there's a fountain at the other end of the sunken gardens that acts as a wishing well.

twb[23] - Molten

30 Aug 2023 5 3 159
Looking closely at walls can tell the observer quite a lot about the history. This site has seen at least five buildings, including the one currently present. The base is on the site of "Clifford's Fort" this is part of "Molten" an art gallery / glass studio / gelato & cafe ... moltengallerycafe.com/news

wlp - carved capitals

28 Aug 2022 89
Delicately carved pilaster capitals, supporting the large arch in the ruined church at Brewood Priory. {these are exposed to all possible weather conditions, and are already damaged, maybe some extra protection is needed ?}

rvc[8-22] - erosion in sight

28 Aug 2022 90
Fascinating ... When the tide comes in, the waves washing across and into this hole will swirl the trapped stone around. This will grind the stone surfaces together, the resulting abrasion will make the hole bigger, at the same time, the entrapped stone will get smaller - and eventually, it will be rinsed out of the hole. Bad weather - ie more violent waves - will probably push another stone into the hole, and the process repeats ...

vin[22] - stone bridge

06 Aug 2022 4 4 137
A heavy duty stone-built bridge over the almost flow-less Chainley Burn, with the Vindolanda cafe etc on the far bank. There has been very little rain over the past three months, so there is almost no water in the burn compared to the normal levels for a wet winter.

O&S - fireplace

01 Jul 2021 67
Someone with a creative bent built [or designed] this fireplace. I'm quite a fan of dry stone walling and this is an interesting variation on that particular skill. . . Not my image : fair use & public enertainment
