SoS[25] - first lambs of 2025 {5 of 5}
27 Feb 2025 |

Hadn't seen any lambs locally [by the third week in February] so we went looking and eventually found these little ones over by Penrith.
To be quite honest, open-field lambing seems to have been very late in the North of England this year, and in parts of Wales as well. Maybe the grotty weather this time last year resulted in a late "tupping" season for this year [Tupping is putting the rams in with the ewes].

Heavily pregnant ewes do not appreciate horses and hounds in their field, or nearby.
Many of these ewes have just galloped up from this side of the line of trees, that is a relatively steep slope.
STTES[24] - animals to pet

|
The "petting farm" [Animals About Town] have brought four goats, a sheep plus various rabbits and guinea pigs to the rally.
{They were here last year, as well}

Spotted just off the A689 [Alston to Brampton] on our way to Hickins' for some food.
The fence is also providing somewhere to hang the hay !
The hay patch on the ground has two sets of lambs and one ewe, the other mum is the one much closer to the camera.
First lambs I've seen in 2024.
STTES[23] - black sheep {2 of 2} (petting 2 of 5)

This black sheep has the Zwartbles points {white blaze to the face, white hocks and tip of the tail, although the socks are rather short}

Mobile Petting service brought some sheep, this black one [probably a Zwartbles or Blawen ?], a couple of lambs and a ewe.
oad - Soay ewes

Small flock of Soay ewes, no lambs this year [2023], despite their being - officially - a rare breed.
They responded to a "come and get it" call, but were disappointed we didn't have any sheep nuts !
[including the white one, she was sired by a local non-soay tup, hence her horns & fleece colour].

The heavy horse is never bothered by the Iron Horses, and often comes to look when a down train is waiting here in case a snack is available. The sheep are far more likely to dash off in the same circumstances !
Often, waiting passengers admire the flowers and shrubs in the garden, which runs the full length of the down platform, this flower bed is some 450ft long and varies between 10ft and 16ft wide (with the only palm trees on the railway).
oad - local lamb

The first of the field born lambs in our local area. Many farmers around here who are aiming for the early lamb market use sheds for lambing.

It took me several attempts to catch this image of one lamb standing on the ewe's back. Previous attempts had been beaten by the speed with which they moved to come closer - as I assume they associated a car stopping with the delivery of food.
The gap in the top coping on the wall was repaired, with extra and replacement stones a few weeks later.
oad - Herdwick lamb

One small black Herdwick lamb running to keep up with mum ! It was difficult to capture this shot....
oad - wet herdwicks

A wet day in the Lakes, and a field of Herdwick ewes - with lambs due very soon.
