rvc[8-22] - erosion in sight

28 Aug 2022 89
Fascinating ... When the tide comes in, the waves washing across and into this hole will swirl the trapped stone around. This will grind the stone surfaces together, the resulting abrasion will make the hole bigger, at the same time, the entrapped stone will get smaller - and eventually, it will be rinsed out of the hole. Bad weather - ie more violent waves - will probably push another stone into the hole, and the process repeats ...

gbw - rock not known

Recently found several pieces of this rock on the foreshore at Parton, Cumbria. The red strands look like fossil seaweed, and the background might be sandstone ? No idea what the rock actually is, but probably not that "local" as it is part of the sea defences. I'm sure I've seen the darker red "lumps" in another context, also on sandstone.
