That's Borth War Memorial on Craig-yr-Wylfa, overlooking Cardigan Bay.
Today's trivia moment ...
It was struck by lightning on 21st March 1983, and had to be rebuilt.

The text reads ...
" THIS OAK TREE WAS PLANTED
ON THE OLD COCKPIT
AND CELEBRATES
THE CROWNING OF
GEORGE V 1912 "
So the oak tree is at least 111 years old ... better add 5 to 9 years to that as it would have been a small sapling when planted.
[although the grass has been cleared from around the stone, it needs a little tlc, and perhaps some attention to the inscription]

Patch of poppies, including some oriental varieties, growing in the burn scar of the "bonfire" patch on Elsdon village green.

Taken looking down into the centre of a poppy flower.
Probably a Papaver somniferum as the leaves are wrong for Papaver orientale

Look closely at the front of this house - the two semi-circular arches suggest that it has been rebuilt from a hemmel.
A hemmel is a Northumberland farm building, usually single story, with arches giving access to the sheltered area inside. Frequently used for implements or for hay / winter feed / lambing. Sometimes located out in the fields, rather than in the main farmyard. {Byres are for the animals}

Infographic showing the layout of Elsdon, and the main points of interest.
Unfortunately our walk around was cut short by the increasing level of rain, from drizzle to a near downpour.
Information from another source suggests that the six sections of the central village green total about 7 1/2 acres {3 hectares}.
eld - pig-sty

Pair of stone-built pig-sties. Sadly the wooden gates have seen better days, and someone has dumped rubbish over them.
I have fond memories {pre foot&mouth / swine flu} of some Tamworth Gingers and Glosucester Old Spots inhabiting similar structures at Beamish Open Air Museum.
{if they are bedded on straw and "mucked out" regularly pigs don't smell unpleasant}.

I was particularly taken with the orange & black pansies. I'll be looking out for seeds/plants next year.
The tub, a "half-barrel" needs some screws / coach bolts to hold the iron straps in place, otherwise the contents will eventually force the staves apart.

The infographic shows the all wooden construction of the motte & bailey castle. It wasn't rebuilt in stone as the seat of power moved to another settlement.

Looking up at the Motte Hills, from just by the community hall.
There's a track to follow that takes you up to the same level with the lower edge of the mounds.

This complex of buildings includes the old school [furthest away from the camera] which is currently unoccupied. There was also a small cafe here, which was popular with cyclists, but sadly, it has been closed for some time ...

Tucked into the bus shelter was this display to help you identify wildlife. There is a very wide range of local flora and fauna, some of which can be quite rare.

Saw the enclosing bench, but it wasn't until later that I went over to have a short sit down, after reading the plaque on the little stone pillar.

Sign directing visitors to the main door to the "Bird in Hand" - it has been somewhat modernised inside, but everyone was friendly and the food we had was lovely. Even brought a bowl of water over for Ben.
