whn - for the sailors

07 Jul 2024 7 7 137
In the market place at Whitehaven are these two statues, representing the sailors & maritime history of this town. Back in the 18th century Whitehaven was, after London, the second busiest port of England. This is by tonnage from 1750 to 1772, with export of coal - mainly to Ireland / Isle of Man - and trade with the American colonies.

That is one way of looking at things ... and I don't disagree, to be honest. . {even if some fortunes were made in ways we now consider reprehensible, that doesn't detract form the philanthropy that resulted - rather than re-name venues or remove/vandalise statues; the solution is plaques with the alternative / updated information, and a lot of education}. . . Not my Image : fair use & public information
