The practice of wearing a veil, or hijab, in Islam is thought to have originated with the Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad required his wives to wear veils in public to protect them from harm and to show their high social status. Upper-class women soon followed suit, wearing veils to symbolize that they didn't need to work because their husbands were wealthy.
