In painting the baroque reached maturity early with Peter Paul Rubens. The Anatomy Lesson, Rembrandt (ca 1632) in the seventeenth century science became modern, in the sense that it was based on direct observation and experimentation. This highly dramatic scene, one of the earliest of Rembrandt (who painted it at age 25), shows the masterful control of light and shade, born out by the tense atmosphere of the laboratory, and the expressions of deep curiosity on the student’s faces.
