The black sand that makes up the famous Hawaiian black sand beaches is made out of basalt. These beaches can form rapidly when molten lava meets the cold ocean water in an explosive confrontation. The shattered volcanic rock is further broken down as it is smashed together by the waves. Black sand beaches can be relative short lived. This photo shows the black sand of Maui's Pa'iloa beach.

Within the city of Hilo, average rainfall varies from about 130 inches a year near the shore to as much as 200 inches upslope. The wettest part of the island, with a mean annual rainfall exceeding 300 inches, lies about 6 miles upslope from the city limits.
A fern is any one of a group of about 20,000 species of plants classified in the phylum or division Pteridophyta, also known as Filicophyta. The group is also referred to as polypodiophyta, or polypodiopsida when treated as a subdivision of tracheophyta (vascular plants).
