“So it is: we are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not Ill-supplied but wasteful of it.”
― Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
Flowers blush. It may seem remarkable to say this, but it is true. Many flowers change colors after they are pollinated. This physiological shift happens because of a pH change from basic to acidic within their petals, possibly triggered by pollination or subsequent fertilization. In other flowers, colors often change with age, transitioning from a young, rewarding bloom (rewarding to the pollinator, that is) to an older, senescent one. . . . The drama of creation, according to the Hawaiian account, is divided into a series of stages. . . At first the lowly zoophytes and corals come into being, and these are followed by worms and shellfish, each type being declared to conquer and destroy its predecessor, a struggle for existence in which the strongest survive. Parallel with this evolution of animal forms plant life begins on land and the sea -- at first with the algae, followed by seaweeds and rushes. As type follows type, the accumulating slime of their decay raises the land above the water, in which, as spectator of all, swims the octopus, the lone survivor from an earlier world. ~ Roland Dixon, Oceanic Mythology, 1916

Love is like a tree: it grows by itself, roots itself deeply in our being and continues to flourish over a heart in ruin. The inexplicable fact is that the blinder it is, the more tenacious it is. It is never stronger than when it is completely unreasonable. ~ Victor Hugo.

……. Supposing it were found that there is indeed a special pentapeptide released into the blood on the telling a lie, or some queer glycolipid in the sweat of one’s palms, or, worst of all, something chemically detectable in balloons of exhaled breath. The next thing to happen would surely be new industries in Texas and Japan for the manufacture of electronic sensing devices to be carried in one’s pocket, or perhaps worn conspicuously on one’s sleeve depending on the consumer’s particular need. Governments would become involved, sooner or later, and the lawyers and ethicists would have one field day after another. Before long we would stop speaking to each other, television would be abolished as a habitual felon, politicians would be confined to house arrest, and civilization would become to a standstill.~ Page 130

No metaphor, remember, can express
A real historical unhappiness;
Your tears have value if they make us gay;
O Happy Grief! And all sad verse can say. ~ Auden
