Late 19th century: alteration of holy Moses, popularized in the 1940s by the character Captain Marvel in DC Comics' comic book of the same name. It is most likely a minced oath, a cleaned-up version of a taboo phrase such as "Holy Moses". It was popularized in the U.S. as an expression often used by Billy Batson, the alter ego of Captain Marvel, a superhero created for Fawcett Publications.

“Doggone it,” the expression probably originated as a euphemism for “goddamn it.” The Oxford English Dictionary says “dog-tone” which is former times was also written as “dog-on” is a 19th century Americanism.

RETRODICT; if you see an ice cube sitting on the kitchen counter, you know that in a few minutes there will just be a puddle of water. But if someone comes in a bit later and sees only the puddle, they would have no way of knowing where the water had come from. You can't "retordict" the presence of the ice cube
