Grass

Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo. Shovel them under and let me work -- I am the grass; I cover all ~ Sandburg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two years, ten years, and the passengers ask the conduct What is this where are we now? I am the grass. Let me work ~ Excerpt "A Terrible Love for War" ~ James Hillman You who govern public affairs, what need have you to employ punishments? I love virtue, and the people will be virtuous. The virtues of a superior man are like the wind; the virtues of a common man are like the grass; the grass, when the wind passes over it, bends.” ~ Page 156 ~ Walden - Henry David Thoreau

An ambition is a little creeper that creeps and creeps in your heart night and day, singing a little song “Come and find me, come and find me. ~ Carl Sandburg

The Summer Grass

24 Sep 2020 89
Summer grass aches and whispers It wants something; it calls and it sings; it pours Out wishes to the overhead stars. The rain hears; the rain answers; the rain is slow Coming; the rain wets the face of the grass. ~ Carl Sandburg

At dusk

07 Jan 2016 101
................................ Dreams, only dreams in the dusk, Only the old remembered pictures Of lost days when the day’s loss Wrote in tears the heart’s loss. Tears and loss and broken dreams May find your heart at dusk. ~ Carl Sangburg

Door

07 Dec 2014 108
An open door says, “Come in.” A shut door says, “Who are you?” Shadows and ghosts go through shut doors. If a door is shut and you want it shut, why open it? If a door is open and you want it open, why shut it? Doors forget but only doors know what it is doors forget. ~ "Doors" ~ Carl Sandburg

The silence of the morning, See the night slur into dawn, Hear the slowI shall foot it Down the roadway in the dusk, Where shapes of hunger wander And the fugitives of pain go by. I shall foot it In great winds arise Where tall trees flank the way And shoulder toward the sky. The broken boulders by the road Shall not commemorate my ruin. Regret shall be the gravel under foot. I shall watch for Slim birds swift of wing That go where wind and ranks of thunder Drive the wild processionals of rain. The dust of the traveled road Shall touch my hands and face. "THE ROAD AND THE END " ~ Carl Sandburg

Fence

22 Jul 2013 7 9 267
Now the stone house on the lake front is finished and the workmen are beginning the fence. The palings are made of iron bars with steel points that can stab the life out of any man who falls on them. As a fence, it is a masterpiece, and will shut off the rabble and all vagabonds and hungry men and all wandering children looking for a place to play. Passing through the bars and over the steel points will go nothing except Death and the Rain and To-morrow. "A fence" ~ Carl Sandburg HFF -- friends and visitors

The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on. ~ Carl Sandburg,
