My First Jagged Ambush Bug Sighting From July 30,…

This is my first Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymatinae) sighting from July 30, 2007, the first of many images since. Little by little, I am bringing my best works from flickr to Ipernity. This is a rather odd looking insect predator. They lie in wait on flowers for a flying insect to land and grab the insect with their "lobster-like" front claws. They then extend the mouth parts (folded under) and puncture the insect's body to suck out the body fluids. This one is a female and is perched on a Queen Ann's Lace flower. The males are darker with orange colored eyes and their bodies are chunkier looking. These insects are winged and fly from flower to flower to stalk their prey. They rely on stealth and some camouflage. They are rather small in size, about an eighth of an inch wide and about three eighths of an inch long. I have seen them with captured insects many time larger, including butterflies, honey bees and large bumble bees. The original image was twice life-size (2:1), at the sensor, and was cropped. For this image, I used my old manual focus Pre-AI Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 Lens and Nikon PK-3 Extension Ring plus Vivitar 2X Teleconverter plus Fotodiox Nikon F mount to Canon EOS mount adapter ring on my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) Camera, handheld, manually focused, stop-down metered in Av mode, with fill-in flash with camera's built-in electronic flash. I captured this image in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA.

Set-up for up to half life-size at the sensor.

This is an image of my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52A SP 70-210mm f3.5-4 CF Tele Macro Lens with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax KA Mount on my Pentax K20D camera. I originally purchased this lens and two other Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses along with two Tamron Adaptall-2 mounts, a Vivitar KA 17-28mm lens, and my used K20D camera body on an order from KEH, which arrived in mid-September, 2010. I did some testing of this lens, but seemed to favor the other Tamron Adaptall-2 70-210mm lens on the order, the Model 19AH. I was looking for a lens that would provide me with quality close-up images up to half life-size at the sensor good for flowers, large insects, and frogs, which this lens will do, and with a good working distance. I decided this past Spring to give this lens another look and have enjoyed the results so much that I tend to grab this lens first for this type of imaging. This lens provides me with clear and sharp images and cost me all of $29 US. I imaged my camera and lens in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA. For this image, I used my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) Camera and Canon EF-S AF 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens, hand held, manually focused, Focal Length 45mm, ISO 400, f10, 1/100 sec., with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a full resolution Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any post-production, adjusting, editing, cropping, or re-sizing. When I previewed this image before uploading, I noticed an error with this set-up, clearly visible in the image. Does anyone else see it?

Close-up Set-up to 1:2

This is an image of my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) Camera and attached AF Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 LD Tele-Macro Lens. This set-up is capable in macro mode (as shown) to 1:2, half life size, at the sensor. I bought this lens "As Is" from KEH in EX condition for $25 US. The AF is broken and does not function. This lens works beautifully as a manual focus lens. For this image, I used my manual focus Vivitar PK-A/R 17-28mm f4-4.5 Wide Angle Zoom Lens on Pentax K20D camera, manually focused, hand held, SR 28mm, ISO 400, f5.6, 1/20 sec, with available ambient light. This is a full resolution large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) without any adjustment, cropping, or resizing.

Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 65A Lens

This is an image of a used lens I purchased in February, 2012. The lens is a manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 65A SP 35-105mm f2.8 Aspherical Lens with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 A3FH Lens Hood, shown mounted to my Pentax K20D camera. I bought it used from KEH with the zoom function very loose. I tried several ideas to try to remedy the problem with the zoom function and was able to resolve the problem quickly and at no cost. I folded a piece of a note card and inserted it between the two lens barrels and it is held in place with a rubber band. This provides just enough friction to keep the lens barrel still and will also zoom easily. For this image, I used my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) Camera and Canon AF EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens, hand held, manually focused, 54mm F/L, ISO 400, f20, 1/200 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any adjustment, editing, cropping, or re-sizing.
