My First Jagged Ambush Bug Sighting From July 30,…

25 Sep 2013 1 2 723
This is my first Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymatinae) sighting from July 30, 2007, the first of many images since. Little by little, I am bringing my best works from flickr to Ipernity. This is a rather odd looking insect predator. They lie in wait on flowers for a flying insect to land and grab the insect with their "lobster-like" front claws. They then extend the mouth parts (folded under) and puncture the insect's body to suck out the body fluids. This one is a female and is perched on a Queen Ann's Lace flower. The males are darker with orange colored eyes and their bodies are chunkier looking. These insects are winged and fly from flower to flower to stalk their prey. They rely on stealth and some camouflage. They are rather small in size, about an eighth of an inch wide and about three eighths of an inch long. I have seen them with captured insects many time larger, including butterflies, honey bees and large bumble bees. The original image was twice life-size (2:1), at the sensor, and was cropped. For this image, I used my old manual focus Pre-AI Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 Lens and Nikon PK-3 Extension Ring plus Vivitar 2X Teleconverter plus Fotodiox Nikon F mount to Canon EOS mount adapter ring on my Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) Camera, handheld, manually focused, stop-down metered in Av mode, with fill-in flash with camera's built-in electronic flash. I captured this image in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA.

After Dinner Fly

21 Jul 2013 1 1005
I had a little time before sundown tonight to take a little walk along Center Street by the motel with my camera and macro set-up for 2:1, at the sensor, macros. I captured this image by the corner of Stanley Street and Center Street in Auburn, Maine, USA. This fly is sitting on a Queen Anne's Lace flower. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB SP 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A Mount, all mounted to Pentax K20D Camera, hand held, manually focused by moving the entire assembly back and forth, Shake Reduction set to 180mm, ISO 400, f8 on lens, 1/180 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a Full Resolution Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any post-processing, editing, adjustment, cropping, or re-sizing.

Clown Face

19 Jul 2013 5 5 1347
I was told this one looks like a clown face. "You have a funny face. You should be a clown." I heard that comment, as told to my friend several years ago. "This guy even has a green rubber nose..." I spent some time, today, at Jamie's Pond Wildlife Management Area in Hollowell, Maine, USA, just outside of Augusta. This site has always had opportunities for close insect face macros. I try to build up a good working relationship with the insects by first imaging them at lower magnification and at farther distances. As the insect starts to feel comfortable with my presence, I slowly increase the magnification and decrease the working distance. When I made this image I was down to a working distance of about 5-6 inches. This particular Dragonfly became so comfortable with me and would see an insect fly by, fly off to catch it, and return to the same spot a few seconds later. This is a 2:1(twice life-size), at the sensor, macro image. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB SP 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A Mount, all mounted to Pentax K20D Camera, hand held, manually focused by moving the entire assembly back and forth, Shake Reduction set to 200mm, ISO 400, f8 on lens, 1/90 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a Full Resolution Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any post-processing, editing, adjustment, cropping, or re-sizing. There is good face and compound eye detail visible in the Original Size.

Leaf Hopper and Reflection

24 Jun 2013 2 985
Insect macro imaging doesn't have to stop when the sun sets. This image was made well after dark under the floodlights outside the sun room in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA. Many insects were drawn to the outside lighting including this very small green colored Leaf Hopper. I imaged this one on the door frame under the floodlights. This is a 2.8:1, at the sensor, macro. If you view this one large there is good face and compound eye detail. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB SP 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 140f 1.4X Flat Field Teleconverter and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A Mount, all mounted to Pentax K20D Camera, hand held, manually focused by moving the entire assembly back and forth, Shake Reduction set to 300mm, ISO 400, f13 on lens, 1/90 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a Full Resolution Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any post processing, editing, adjustment, cropping, or re-sizing.

Crab Spider on Daisy

23 Jun 2013 3 2 1002
I encountered this Flower Crab Spider on a Daisy flower along Mill Road between the road and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, near the intersection with Downey Road, in Millerton, New York, USA. I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 model 52B SP 90mm f2.5 macro lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1tube with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A mount on Pentax K20D camera, hand held, manually focused, ISO 200, Shake Reduction set to 100mm focal length, f22 on lens, 1/180 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a 1:1, life size at the sensor, macro. Please view large for details. This is a full resolution large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) without any post-processing, editing, adjustment, cropping, or re-sizing.

New York Weevil Portrait

22 Jun 2013 2 1 956
I found this one on May First sitting on the downspout from the gutter on the house in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA. I believe this is the face of a New York Weevil, Ithycerus noveboracensis. This is a 2.8:1, at the sensor, macro. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 140f 1.4X Flat Field Teleconverter and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax KA Mount on my Pentax K20D Camera, hand held, manually focused, Shake Reduction set to 300mm, ISO 400, f8 on lens, 1/90 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. Dew Drop

26 May 2013 5 1 969
This image has been my most popular, most commented, and most favorited on my flickr account. I imaged this one on August 04, 2007, after introducing my then new Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) camera body to my old 1973 vintage Pre-AI MicroNikkor 55mm f3.5 lens and Nikon PK-3 1:1 extension tube and the full set of of Vivitar AT-3 extension rings plus Fotodiox Nikon F mount to Canon EOS mount adapter ring, resting on a homemade "Bean Bag," manually focused, stop-down metered in Av mode, with available ambient lighting. This image was slightly cropped and exposure values were tweaked in MS Photo Editor where the EXIF file was removed.

Moth, Face, almost straight on.

25 May 2013 2 1 998
Tonight turned out to be a good night for insect macro imaging. This image is viewed from the front of the moth, almost straight on. This is a 2.8:1, at the sensor, macro view. This moth was attracted to the outside (flood) lighting on the backyard deck in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB SP 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 140f 1.4X Flat Field Teleconverter and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A Mount, all mounted to Pentax K20D Camera, Manually Focused, Hand Held, Manual Mode, Shake Reduction 300mm, ISO 400, f6.7, 1/20 sec., with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash. This is a Full Resolution Large JPEG and is Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) and is without any post processing, editing, adjustment, cropping, or re-sizing.

Horse Fly, Right Eye Detail

25 May 2013 1 2 417
This Horse Fly right eye was cropped from a face shot. This fly has sustained an eye injury, near the center of the eye. The original image was a 2.8:1, at the sensor, face shot and was imaged in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA. This image was edited in Aviary. For this image, I used my manual focus Tamron Adaptall-2 Model 52BB SP 90mm f2.5 Macro Lens and Tamron Adaptall-2 18f 1:1 Tube and Tamron Adaptall-2 140f 1.4X Flat Field Teleconverter and Tamron Adaptall-2 01f 2X Flat Field Teleconverter with attached Tamron Adaptall-2 Pentax K A Mount on Pentax K20D Camera, hand held, manually focused, Shake Reduction set to 200mm, ISO 400, f6.7 on lens, 1/30 sec, with fill-in flash from camera's built-in electronic flash.

Horse Fly Face

25 May 2013 7 2 919
The opportunity presented itself to me. I was waiting for the repairman from Sears to arrive to repair the clothes dryer and found this Horse Fly trapped in the closed garage on the door window. I tried imaging at 4:1 at the sensor and 2:1 at the sensor. I wasn't happy with the results. I added my 1.4X TC to the 2:1 set-up for this 2.8:1 at the sensor image. I adjusted the values in aviary. The image is still a Large JPEG at full resolution, not cropped or re-sized. This fly face was imaged in rural upstate Columbia County, New York, USA.
