Pianta tappezzante succulenta originaria dell'Africa meridionale, ma ormai molto diffusa in tutta l'area mediterranea. Ha sottili fusti prostrati, molto ramificati e confusi, carnosi, che portano numerose foglioline a forma di cuore allungato, lunghe 3-4 centimetri, di colore verde brillante, spesse e turgide Da primavera inoltrata fino all'estate produce numerosissimi piccoli fiori a forma di margherita, con svariati petali lineari, di colore bianco, rosa, viola o rosso, a seconda della varietà. la farfalla è una Cacyreus marshalli (Butler 1898) meglio conosciuta come Licenide dei gerani; è una piccola farfalla originaria dell’Africa meridionale (Sudafrica, Mozambico), che a causa dell'innalzamento della temperatura terrestre, e degli intensi scambi commerciali con i paesi africani, si è oramai spostata verso le latitudini settentrionali, giungendo, sulla penisola italiana, perfino in Piemonte. Questa specie, che nelle zone di origine non causa danni particolari, in Europa è diventata un vero flagello per i gerani coltivati, appartenenti ai generi Pelargonium e Geranium. Sul mio balcone ha messo KO il mio ultimo geranio finora sopravvissuto :( Spero non si ripeta anche con questa succulenta (Aptenia cordifolia)! Cacyreus marshalli on Aptenia cordifolia The Geranium Bronze or Brun des pélargoniums in French (Cacyreus marshalli) is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae. The wingspan is 15–23 mm for males and 18–27 mm for females. Adults are on wing year round in warmer areas, but usually from August to May in South Africa. It is brown with a fine black edge interlaced with white and a very thin tail. The underside is grey-brown with dark bands. The species is native of South Africa. It has, however, been introduced (deliberately or accidentally) to Mediterranean Europe (initially the Balaeric Islands), where it has spread as a pest of cultivated Pelargonium geraniums. On my balcony she destroyed my last pelargonium :( Hope that she will not be a killer also for this succulent !
