un po' di riposo dopo la visita della bella abbazia di Montmajour Arles - Francia in PiP La cappella della Santa Croce: fu costruita per ospitare la più importante reliquia del Monastero: un pezzo della Vera Croce. La sua posizione un po' discosta dal monastero permetteva ai monaci di godere un po' di privacy rispetto al grande afflusso dei pellegrini registrato durante tutto il Medioevo. Costruita a forma di croce, con la sua dignitosa, semplice e simmetrica architettura che rivela anche grande sapienza costruttiva, è considerata un capolavoro romanico. Thoronet Abbey (French: L'abbaye du Thoronet) is a former Cistercian abbey built in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century, now restored as a museum. It is sited between the towns of Draguignan and Brignoles in the Var Department of Provence, in southeast France. It is one of the three Cistercian abbeys in Provence, along with the Sénanque Abbey and Silvacane, that together are known as "the Three Sisters of Provence." Thoronet Abbey had a significant influence upon the Swiss architect Le Corbusier Following the Second World War, Father Couturier, a Dominican priest and artist, who had contacts with contemporary artists Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, invited Le Corbusier to design a convent at La Tourette, close to Lyon. Father Coutourier wrote to Le Corbusier in 1953: "I hope that you can go to Le Thoronet, and that you will like that place. It seems to me that there you will find the essence of what a monastery must have been like at the time it was built; a place where men lived by a vow of silence, devoted themselves to reflection and meditation and a communal life which has not changed very much over time." Le Corbusier visited Thoronet, and wrote an article about his visit, including the observation, "the light and the shadow are the loudspeakers of this architecture of truth." The convent that he eventually built has a number of features inspired by Thoronet, including the tower and the simple volumes, and the alternating full and empty spaces created by bright light falling on the walls. The Abbey of Saint-Roman (Abbaye de Saint-Roman), is a cave monastery located in the communes of Beaucaire and Comps, in the Gard département of France. The site, which includes the ruins of a castle, the château de Saint-Roman-d'Aiguille, has been protected by the French Ministry of Culture as a "monument historique" since 1990 and includes a chapel, cloisters, terrace, tombs and walls. It was constructed in the 9th, 10th, 12th and 15th centuries. The abbey is reached by a signposted path from Beaucaire which leads past a vast chamber and the monks' cells to the chapel carved out of the rock (in photo here) which contains the tomb of St Roman. From the terrace, there is a fine view over the Rhône, Avignon and the Mont Ventoux area with Tarascon in the foreground (see PiP ). Effetto Mistral e panomama della piana del Rodano nei pressi di Beaucaire e precisamente dall'alto della abbazia di Saint Roman. Penso che quello laggiù in fondo sia il Mont Ventoux. Il nome sembrerebbe derivare da "vento": il Maestrale (il Mistral in francese), soffia infatti sul suo crinale sommitale (1912 metri s.l.m.) con continuità e grande violenza, raggiungendo e superando spesso i 160 km/h (la velocità massima raggiunta dal Mistral fu di 313 km/h, registrata il 20 marzo 1967) per poi diffondersi nella pianura sottostante, fino al mare. Ma un'interpretazione più moderna e approfondita assegna l'origine del nome Ventoux al lemma pregallico ventur, poi passato nella lingua occitana, che significa "colui che si vede da lontano". Numerosi studi e testimonianze d'epoca danno ormai pieno credito a questo etimo da molti anni. Anche nelle locali lingue provenzale e occitano il Monte non è chiamato Ventoux, bensì "Ventour". L'abbazia di Saint-Michel de Frigolet è un'antica abbazia di monaci premostratensi, sita nel territorio comunale di Tarascona, nel dipartimento di Bocche del Rodano. Isolata in una valle selvaggia al centro di pini, ulivi e cipressi, prende il nome dal ferigoulo, il timo in lingua provenzale . Ora accoglie una comunità di canonici regolari premostratensi e segue la regola di vita di sant'Agostino. Dispone di due ostelli monastici, una libreria e un ristorante, dal 2016 ospita una scuola cattolica. In PiP un dettaglio.
