DWD Yard, Thomas Street, Dublin 23/12/2011. George Roe and Company bought a small distillery on Thomas Street in Dublin in 1757. At the time it was powered by the largest smock windmill in Europe and thankfully, it still stands proudly to this day. The early 20th century was a very difficult period for the whiskey industry in Ireland. The First World War, competition from Scottish blended whiskies, prohibition in the United States, and social and economic instability in Ireland caused many distilleries to fail. By 1926 Geo. Roe & Co., Distillers had ceased producing whiskey, although they still possessed large quantities of unsold stock in storage. By the mid 1940's Geo. Roe & Co. were dissolved and in 1949 Arthur Guinness Son & Co. took over the site which is located across the street from the St.James's Gate Brewery on Thomas St.
