Sadly, it was destroyed in a mid-air collision with its team mate, Vampire T.11 XH304, during the Mildenhall Air Show on 25/05/86 with the loss of both pilots.

This classic airliner was originally delivered to Sabena as OO-SJN in 1969 and has been in service with NATO since 1988 - long may it continue to grace the skies.

This was the first time a C-17 had visited BAL and it was also notable in that it had arrived with two former Guantanamo Bay detainees to whom the Irish Government had offered asylum.

RCH496 taking off on runway 29 just before dark. It was used to transport two former detainees of Guantanamo Bay who are being allowed to resettle in Ireland.
