The Swindon built Type 1 650hp ‘Teddy Bear’ diesel hydraulic 0-6-0, which became Class 14. Built 1964/65 and all gone by 1969.
Intended to replace the hordes of Western Region Pannier Tank steam locos on local trip freights and shunting duties, construction of these proceeded apace despite the traffic for which they were being built for was fast dissapearing.
All but a handfull were moved up to Hull Dairycoates where it was soon decided by the Eastern Region that they were not wanted.
Enter the National Coal Board and British Steel Corporation, to whom the majority of the locos passed on to, but when those industries in turn declined, a number were purchased by preservation societies. Of the 56 locos built, a total of 19 are preserved.
This example, No 45, is the former D9520, and spent time at BSC Corby Steelworks from 1968 - 1981, and is seen moving into the shed yard at Wansford, Nene Valley Railway.
