All gone

Taken from the same spot as the previous photo, but one year on. August 1968, notable in British Railway history as the month that working steam finished. As seen from the previous photo, Woodley was the local steam hotspot, with what seemed like a continuous procession of steam hauled freight, the majority of it to and from the Heaton Mersey direction and Woodhead. The Black 5s, 8Fs and 9Fs gave way to Sulzer Type 2, EE Type 4 and Brush Type 4. (Class 24/25, 40 and 47). Here we see a Derby built DMU - Class 108 - departing Woodley with a local service to Manchester Piccadilly. 28Aug68. Scanned

Opened in about 1865 by the Marple, New Mills and Hayfield Junction Railway, Marple Viaduct carries the Manchester to Sheffield main line over the River Goyt. Through the arches can be seen Marple Aquaduct, built in 1800 to carry the Lower Peak Forest Canal over the valley. Tue19May92. Scanned
