Stockport town centre

10 Aug 2013 13 32 534
Stockport in times past, with a view looking down Chestergate, taken by my dad sometime during the early 1960s. The Halifax Building Society premises on the left is now the Chestergate Tavern, and the building further along, adjacent to the line of parked cars, is now a Farmfoods store. I'm not sure what it was back then. The road on the right climbs up to St Peters Square, just around the corner at the top of the hill. In the background can be seen the cooling tower of Portwood Gas Works, a landmark for many years now long gone, and a reference point for aircraft coming in to Manchester Airport. Note the farm tractor approaching in the distance. Scanned

Mill town

1960s Stockport, and a photo taken by my dad from the top deck of a bus, sometime during the early 1960s. This is looking down Lancaster Street, off Great Portwood Street. The Old King public house is on the right of the picture. The mill in the background is still in use as industrial units but virtually nothing else in this photo remains today; the whole area is now a retail park. Scanned
