We rode on the 16.29 Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Freiberg via Tharandt Steam Festival special which was double-headed by Class 50 2-10-0 3648-8 and Class 23-10 2-6-2 35 1097-1. Here we are departing from platform 1 under Dresden station's splendid overall roof. The locos are just visible at the head of our train! A fair crowd turned out to watch and film us leave.
It's not often that I get asked to explain my pics but I was asked a fair question about why this image should fit into the Naturally Occurring Collages Group. This deserves a fair answer.
One defintion of a collage is art that results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.
On the face of it my image is of a railway station and it was taken as such. On another level the superimposed verticals, diagonals and curves of the silhouetted steelwork create an intriguing pattern. The shadowy figures "pasted' into the scene add to the effect of a collage of different shapes and angles.
That was how my mind was working when I uploaded this shot - a found collage - although not necessarily when I took the picture. Perhaps an element of blur or vignetting might have taken it out of the realm of just a railway scene.

This attractive glass & metal covered staircase, dating from the 1909 rebuilding leads down from the island platform at Tharandt railway station to the subway & exit.
I am reminded of the similar covered staircase at Quedlingburg station in the Harz.

Climbing up the mountain out of Schierke on the Brocken line of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen the train winds through thick pine forest with only occasional clearings where there is enough light for a decent on-train shot of the engine: 2-10-2T 99 7243-1.

The Harz Mountains and the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen - narrow gauge (metre) steam.
Staying in Wernigerode we drove to Drei Annen Hohne station and took the train south to Eisfelder Talmühle on the line to Nordhausen. We were pulled there and back by 2-10-2T 99 7245-6 and this shot was taken while taking water before the engine ran round.
The engines of DR Class 99.23 are metre gauge steam locomotives, that were procured by the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in East Germany from 1954 to 1956. When they entered service they had operating numbers 99 231–99 247. Today they are numbered 99 7231–99 7247.
