The fireman of Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45305 has overcooked it in the station but the combination of swirling steam and sunlight makes for a stirring sight as she departs Loughborough with a train for Leicester.

The line up of cranes in Southampton Docks taken from the footplate of British Railways Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell as we crossed the River Test en route from Swanage to Bristol. We were running tender-first from Swanage engine & coach to Southampton where we reversed to take the line to Salisbury. We were stabled overnight at Bristol before working The Devonian the next day.

Great Western Railway 38xx 2-8-0 3850 heads towards Quorn on the southern edge of Loughborough with a train of empty 16 tonners. The 94 milepost is the distance by rail from Manchester London Road station & not London, evidence of the GCR's roots as the MS&LR.

Everyone waves at a steam train. On the classic seaside stretch of railway near Dawlish the crowds are happy to see Great Western Railway King 4-6-0 6024 King Edward II double-heading with British Railways Standard Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell with the Poole to Plymouth Devonian railtour. The sea was pounding the sea wall and spraying the track & train as we passed. Note the red sandstone cliffs, of Devonian age, which make this area so attractive. Best appreciated large.

Glimpsed through the victorian ironwork of Preston's 1880 subway stairs on platform 1-2 is LMS Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45305 with the 5305LA support coach. We were stabled overnight on what was one of the parcels platforms, later R.e.s. although originally they had been added to the west of the main trainshed in 1903 to handle the increase in passenger traffic. Always good for an impressive display Southern King Arthur N15 4-6-0 30777 Sir Lamiel storms up the hill out of Loughborough during the 2011 Winter Gala. GREAT NEWS! National collection locomotive N15, King Arthur class, No. 777, Sir Lamiel is set to return to steam following a new overhaul agreement with the 5305 Locomotive Association. The overhaul will take place to main line standards with work due to start later this year and due to be completed in 2023.
