HWW Nottingham 6th June 2024

18 Jun 2024 15 12 195
Nottingham railway station was first opened by the Midland Railway in 1848 and rebuilt by the same company in 1904, with much of the current building dating from the later date. This decorative terracotta wall is located above the entrance to the ticket hall and the railway's intertwined initials MR are in the centre. The Midland actually disappeared into the LMS at Grouping in 1923. HWW to everyone. Enjoy the day.

Brilliant sunshine on the platforms of Rugby Midland station as a Virgin Railways Class 390 Pendolino electric multiple unit runs into platform 1 with a train for Birmingham. Trains were badly delayed or cancelled due to a truck striking an under-bridge between Birmingham and Coventry. We took a London Midland Trains emu to Euston which was only 20 minutes late. HBM to everyone. Enjoy the start of a new week.

Another shot of the fabulously textured Glenfield railway tunnel wall. Opened in 1832 by Robert Stephenson for the Leicester & Swannington Railway to bring coal & granite into Leicester. At that time it was the longest rail tunnel in the world at 1796 yards! It was taken over by the Midland Railway in 1846 & closed to passengers in 1928 & goods traffic by BR through to Leicester West Bridge in 1966. HWW to everyone.

A view west from the hillside of Sheffield city centre. Midland railway station sits low in the Sheaf valley. South Street Park Amphitheatre in the foreground is an open-air amphitheatre used for performances, screenings and installations. This area was the site of poor slum housing until cleared in the 1950-60s to make this green space near the heart of the city. HFF to everyone and have a great weekend.

On the preserved Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Midland Railway Fowler 4F 0-6-0 43924 noisily and smokily climbs southwards up the gradient from Keighley with the 14.10 train for Oxenhope. It is carrying a headboard with "43924 The Big Goods Centenarian" written on it. This commemorates its building at Derby works in 1920.

It was 7am with the dawn breaking and Freightliner Class 66/6 diesel 66615 had slowly run along Leicester station's platform 2. As I caught up with the engine it was signalled into the Humberstone Road loop beyond the station & rapidly pulled away northwards.

Saltley Shed Birmingham

11 Oct 2013 119
A Bing view of Saltley shed Birmingham, or what was left of it a couple of years ago. The steam shed used to be top right. The late steam-age staff amenity block is the red brick building right and the diesel shed is mid-right. The Midland mainline from Derby runs diagonally across the view, Derby to top, Birmingham New Street from bottom. The remains of the depot were demolished last year.
