Rendsburg Schleswig-Holstein Germany 28th May 2017

A DB electric loco pulls 5 double-deck Regional coaches southwards across the famous Rendsburg High railway bridge & viaduct high over the Kiel Canal. It is known more descriptively as the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal in German & was opened in 1913. In order to allow the railway line to pass above the canal, the bridge has a clearance of 42 metres over the canal's mean water level. The required maximum incline of 1:150 (one metre gain in altitude per 150 metres distance) made it necessary to build elevated embankments and access bridges of about 5.5 km at each side. To serve Rendsburg station, situated at ground level only a couple of hundred metres from the main bridge, the railway line is routed through a large 360-degree loop on the north bank of the canal My father crossed over this bridge and loop in 1945 while returning on RAF leave from Copenhagen by train and it made a very big impression on him. On me too when he told me about it hence my detour to grab a few shots. What he didn't tell me and I have since discovered was that it is also a transporter bridge so I missed the chance to cross over on it....... Next time! Even the locals stopped to watch the train!

The Great Northern and London & North Western railways opened the southern section of their joint line from Melton Mowbray to the junctions at Welham and Drayton in 1879. It included a tunnel at East Norton and this viaduct over the valley at John O'Gaunt. The railway closed to passengers in 1953 and completely in 1964. HFF and a great weekend!

The view southwards down Carr Lane in Slaithwaite is dominated by the massive stone viaduct carrying the ex-LNWR Standedge route railway line along the north side of the Colne Valley. The chimney is part of the Spa cotton-spinning Mill built in 1907. This vast mill is now the home of Spectrum Yarns and their well-known brand, Stylecraft Yarns.

GCR. My first firing turn on LMS Black 5 4-6-0 45305 with Craig driving. We were on the 13.15 dining train so I had time to drop down for a photo while the soup was being served as we stood on Swithland viaduct. A beautiful sunny day but that steam heat was still needed. It was 45305's 2nd day in full service so felt honoured to be trusted with it! What a great engine. Swithland reservoir is one of the highlights of the Loughborough to Leicester trip on the Great Central Railway with views across to Bradgate Park & the varied birdlife. I'm always impressed by the number of herons around the banks of the lake.
