Abbey Wood station Up platform looking west from the footbridge. The 1849 South Eastern & Chatham Railway buildings look a bit grubby. Commuters to London city centre observe the two trackmen at work. Today the station has changed completey out of recognition as Abbey Wood is the eastern terminus of the new Crossrail / Elizabeth line. Phil Sutters has recently posted a great series of shots of the station: www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/51793576/in/activity

The semaphore signal is very clearly off for the departure of the Class 101 diesel multiple unit from Loughborough station. Because of the fire risk the steam locos are confined to shed and diesels have taken over the services. HFF & have a great weekend.

On its way from Lancaster to Seascale the Class 101 diesel multiple unit pauses by the signal box at Rothley! During the Railways at Work Gala the dmu ran a shuttle between Loughborough & Rothley. Here it was waiting to return north at 10.16 having just reversed at Rothley Brook.

The Quorn Up Home signal is showing an emphatic green as Great Western Railway Hall 4-6-0 4953 Pitchford Hall makes a lively run into the station. This is another shot taken during the Don Bishop photo charter yesterday. In fact in the distance the serried ranks of hi-vis'ed photographers can be seen.

Returning from Northampton we called in at Pitsford and Brampton station on the preserved Northampton and Lamport Railway. www.nlr.org.uk/ The railway which has restored a short section of the ex-LWNR Northampton to Market Harborough line is only open on Sundays but viewing access is easy from the adjacent foot/cycle path that runs along the trackbed. You have to be careful though, it floods!

Todmorden/Burnley Copy Pit, 1st August 1968

The End of Steam on British Railways. A few days before the end at Copy Pit signal box , between Burnley and Todmorden. LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48519 had just banked a diesel hauled freight westwards from Todmorden. There is only one Brownie b/w photo of its progress because my 35mm film had run out. This shot is taken at the summit of the climb after the freight had dropped away down to Burnley off to the right. The mountainous nature of this part of the Pennines is obvious in the background. I had taken a day off from working in the labour pool at Lysaughts steelworks in Scunthorpe, borrowed my dad's car & drove for hours from South Yorkshire over the Pennines - no M62 in those days - & caught this banker before visiting Rose grove and Lostock Hall sheds. A reboot of an early posting to celebrate Happy Fence Friday while we can't upload any new images! Have a great weekend and stay safe.

Aberdeen Scotland 14th April 1977

Aberdeen Station Class 47 diesel 47251 departs past the fabulous signal gantries that used to grace this line. I was returning from supervising a VSP velocity survey on Mobil's Beryl oil production platform & an exploration well in the same block in April 1977. After a helicopter ride from the offshore rig to Sulom Voe in the Shetlands the onward flight to Aberdeen was by DC3 Dakota - brilliant. I then took the train from Aberdeen to Kings Cross changing at Waverley but because I hadn't slept for 48 hours I missed most of the journey south of Edinburgh being slumped in my seat asleep.
