Edinburgh Castle Scotland September 1972

I hitch-hiked north on the A1 from Doncaster to Scotland ending up in Edinburgh and then walked up to the castle. This is the view looking west from Edinburgh Castle. The prominent spires of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral stand out in the mist. Just to not disappoint any railway enthusiasts in my audience I should also point out that the multi-storied building between castle and cathedral is the Lothian Road side of the Caledonian Hotel opened in 1903 by the the Caledonian Railway whose Princes Street station was entered via the hotel's grand arches until its closure in 1965.

Schwäbische Alb Baden-Württemberg Germany July 197…

We were working in Esslingen again and went for a day trip with Joachem and Hannah to the Schwäbische Alb 50 km to the south of the city. The Jurassic limestones of the Alb typically weather like this with deep valleys and flat-topped peaks. Unfortunately I don't know where this shot was taken. Can anyone identify the Schloss and view? Thanks to Stephan (see below) I now know its Burgruine Hohenurach!

HFF Alexanderplatz East Berlin Germany 18th Augus…

After a recent visit to Germany I thought I would post this shot of Alexanderplatz in what was East Berlin in 1972. My railway interest was at a low ebb & I couldn't be bothered to walk over to the station to get a decent shot of the Pacifics still steam-hauling trains in the eastern zone. The Fernsehturm is on the extreme right & the tower in the distance is the Rathaus making the train an arrival at Berlin Alexanderplatz station (to the right behind the high rise). HFF & have a great weekend.

This is not just a shot of random railings in Alexanderplatz, Berlin but my "other" railway photograph taken in Germany in 1972 - I only took two in the three months I was there! Times have changed... My railway interest was at a low ebb & I couldn't even be bothered to walk over to the station to get a decent shot of the Pacifics still steam-hauling trains in the eastern zone although I probably thought I might get arrested if I did. I contented myself with a snatched shot of a train arriving. Lots of interesting cars in the parking though! HFF and keep safe in this second wave of Covid.

Our last night before returning to the UK was spent sleeping on a Dunkirk beach after a six month road trip in my minivan around Europe & Turkey & a rail excursion to the Lebanon. See where this picture was taken. [?]
